Organic Hair Color

I’m not a big fan of coloring my hair, but when gray strands starting making an appearance right above my forehead, it was time to make a move. Thankfully, Richmond is home to Red Salon Organics which carries Organic Color Systems, a completely ammonia-free line of hair color. I was a little nervous to try out this organic line because gray can be tough to cover and organic products are typically not as powerful as their chemical-laden cousins. But my stylist said the gray wouldn’t be a problem so I went for it. The color turned out beautiful. It was like a lush shiny version of my own color. The best part is that you don’t leave the salon smelling like chemicals. The color has a slight licorice smell that I actually kind of like.

I thought the color came out a little fast but that could have been for a number of reasons:

  1. I wasn’t properly taking care of my color – I wasn’t using shampoo for color
  2. My concept of time was skewed. After all, it took me 10 weeks to realize I needed to make another appointment. My stylist said most women have their hair colored every 6-8 weeks.
  3. The formula was a little weak. Allison tweaked the blend for the second time around.
I’ve been paying more attention this time around so I have a better idea of how long the color lasts.

Red Salon Organics also uses Aveda color and products. They told me Aveda has a very low level of ammonia but isn’t as clean as the Organic Color Systems. The products have many natural and organic ingredients and no parabens. I love the smell but wish they’d go completely clean.
